Our Projects

King Valley Aquaponics has always been about learning by doing.

Over the years we have designed, built and operated aquaponic systems, experimented with different growing methods and used those systems to better understand how fish, plants, water and beneficial bacteria work together.

This section brings together projects from throughout the history of King Valley Aquaponics, as well as new projects as we continue developing and experimenting with aquaponics.

Aquaponic Systems

Our projects explore the different components needed to create a practical and productive aquaponic system, including:

  • Fish tanks and fish management
  • Grow beds and growing systems
  • Mechanical and biological filtration
  • Water circulation and plumbing
  • Pumps and aeration
  • Water quality and monitoring
  • Plant production
  • System design and construction

There is no single aquaponic system that is right for everyone. Available space, climate, fish species, crops, budget and what you actually want the system to achieve all influence how it should be designed.

Growing and Experimenting

Operating our own systems has given us the opportunity to experiment with different plants, fish, equipment and growing techniques under real conditions.

Aquaponics is a living system. Something that works brilliantly in one season may behave very differently when water temperatures fall during a North East Victorian winter or rise through summer.

Our projects allow us to test those differences and document what actually happens rather than simply relying on theory.

Education and Demonstration

Education has also been an important part of King Valley Aquaponics.

Our systems have provided practical examples for workshops and aquaponics education, helping people understand not just how the equipment goes together, but why the complete biological system works.

That understanding is important. Successful aquaponics is about much more than connecting a fish tank to a grow bed.

Past Projects

King Valley Aquaponics has a substantial archive of photographs, articles and information from earlier projects.

As we rebuild this website, we are recovering that material from the original King Valley Aquaponics site and bringing the worthwhile projects back online.

Where possible, historical projects will retain their original photographs, information and dates so they remain part of the King Valley Aquaponics story.

New Projects

We'll also use this section to document new projects as they develop.

That means showing the complete process — the idea, design, construction, operation and results — including the things that don't work as expected.

Aquaponics is an ongoing experiment, and that's precisely what makes it interesting.
