King Valley Aquaponics grew from a simple idea: there had to be a better way to produce fresh food using less water and working more closely with natural biological systems.
What began as an interest in aquaponics developed into years of building systems, raising fish, growing vegetables, experimenting, teaching and learning.
On paper, aquaponics sounds remarkably simple. Fish provide nutrients, plants use those nutrients, and the water is returned to the fish.
In practice, a successful aquaponic system is a living ecosystem.
Fish health, water quality, beneficial bacteria, plant nutrition, temperature, oxygen, filtration, stocking levels and system design all have to work together.
Much of what we learnt at King Valley Aquaponics came from actually operating systems — seeing what worked, discovering what didn't and continually improving the way we did things.
Our location in North East Victoria has always been an important part of the story.
We don't operate in a permanently controlled environment. Our systems have had to deal with the realities of the Australian climate, from hot summer days to cold winter temperatures.
Those changing conditions provided valuable lessons about fish, plants, water temperature and seasonal production.
As our knowledge and experience developed, King Valley Aquaponics became about more than operating our own systems.
We began sharing what we had learnt with other people interested in aquaponics.
Workshops, demonstrations and our Aquaponics Master Classes gave people an opportunity to look beyond simply assembling tanks, pumps and grow beds and understand the biology that makes an aquaponic system work.
Education became an important part of King Valley Aquaponics and led to the development of articles, guides and practical information covering many aspects of aquaponics.
The original King Valley Aquaponics website documented much of that journey.
It contained articles, photographs, projects and observations accumulated through years of practical experience.
When we decided to rebuild the website, we also decided that history shouldn't simply disappear.
We are recovering the worthwhile material from the original site and bringing it into this new King Valley Aquaponics website. Historical articles will retain their original publication dates, while information that needs updating will be reviewed and expanded.
King Valley Aquaponics continues to be driven by the same principles that started the journey: experiment, observe, learn and share.
Aquaponics continues to evolve. Equipment improves, technology changes and there are always new ideas worth testing.
This website brings together where we've been, what we've learnt and what comes next.
Our story isn't finished — we're simply starting the next chapter.
King Valley Aquaponics was established in North East Victoria with a simple goal: to explore practical, sustainable ways of producing fresh food using aquaponics.
Aquaponics combines aquaculture — raising fish — with hydroponic plant production in a recirculating system. Nutrients produced by the fish are converted by naturally occurring bacteria into forms that plants can use. The plants take up these nutrients and help clean the water before it returns to the fish.
The result is a productive growing system in which fish, plants, water and beneficial bacteria work together.
Our interest has always been in aquaponics that works in the real world.
Over the years, King Valley Aquaponics has been involved with aquaponic systems, food production, education, workshops and practical experimentation.
Rather than simply explaining aquaponics in theory, we have learnt by building systems, growing plants, raising fish and dealing with the everyday challenges that come with operating an aquaponic system.
That practical experience is what this website is about.
King Valley Aquaponics has accumulated years of articles, photographs, projects and observations about aquaponics.
This website brings that information together as a resource for people interested in:
Some of the material on this site comes from our original King Valley Aquaponics website and has been preserved as part of our history. Other material is being updated as we continue to experiment, learn and develop new projects.
Being based in North East Victoria means our experience isn't based on a tropical climate or a controlled laboratory.
We deal with hot Australian summers, cold winters, changing water temperatures and seasonal growing conditions.
That makes aquaponics particularly interesting. A successful system isn't just about pumps, tanks and grow beds — it's about understanding the living system and adapting it to local conditions.
King Valley Aquaponics is our record of that journey and a place to share what we've learnt along the way.
