LEARNING & TRAINING

Learn the principles. Then learn from the system.

Formal training gave us a foundation; years of operating our own systems taught us how much there is still to learn.

2017 MASTER CLASS

A stronger foundation for our own systems.

Matthew and Kaylene completed Murray Hallam's aquaponics Master Class, covering system operation, water quality, biofiltration, plant nutrition, pest management, farm design, planning, budgeting and produce marketing.

That training helped turn individual pieces of knowledge into a more complete understanding of the system. Back home, we applied those principles by building, growing, watching and adjusting.

LEARNING BY DOING

Different beds, different crops, different lessons.

Media beds

Root support, biological surface area and a versatile place to experiment with herbs, vegetables and larger plants.

Floating raft / DWC

A productive method for leafy crops and quick-turnover plants, with roots suspended directly in aerated water.

Whole-system thinking

Fish health, oxygen, water quality, filtration and plant demand all influence one another.

FUTURE LEARNING

A better space to demonstrate what we've learnt.

Part of the future KVA direction is to create a more useful setting for demonstrations and hands-on learning around aquaponics, protected growing and seasonal food production.

Nothing is being advertised as a scheduled course yet. As the next stage develops, this page will be the place for future learning activities.
