For outdoor areas, herbs can be part of a broader approach that also removes standing water and uses screens, clothing and approved repellents when mosquito pressure is high.

Plants such as rosemary, mint, lavender, basil and lemon-scented herbs release aromatic oils when their leaves are brushed or crushed. They are useful garden plants in their own right, although simply having a pot nearby should not be relied upon as complete mosquito protection.
